100% Carignan, with 50% coming from 75 year-old vines planted on clay-limestone terroir in Les Aspres and 50% from 40 year-old vines grown on black schiste, high up in the hills of Forca Real. Total yields are a miniscule 15 hl/ha, with just 2,000 bottles produced annually. 50% of the grapes are fermented using carbonic maceration, whilst the remaining 50% are fermented tradtionally (some of which are whole bunches, stalks and all).
The nose is meaty, funky, smoky, whilst at the same time wonderfully fruity, with lots of garrigue herb, spice, incense and pencil shaving aromas going on, and even a touch of citrus - a really lovely perfume! In the mouth, it is chock full of fresh bramble, red cherry and red currant flavours, wrapped around a core of cherry skin/citrus acidity and gently rustic tannins, all of which make for a wonderfully refreshing red wine, full of youthful vigour. Lovely to drink now, but with the structure to age nicely for another 3 to 5 years. A Carignan for Burgundy lovers! |
