Made from old vine Syrah and Merlot, aged in stainless steel tanks for 18 months. And who needs oak, when the raw materials are this good?! A deep-ish carmine/blood red colour, fading to a narrow red cherry rim. The nose is fabulous - a riot of black cherry, bramble, blackcurrant and kirsh, with background notes of desiccated orange, damp earth, tobacco and peppery spice. The palate is chock full of black and red berry and cherry fruit flavours, with spicy/peppery nuances, all wrapped around a core of ripe, gently rustic tannins and utterly mouth-watering cherry skin and soft citrus acidity. The softness of the Merlot is perfectly countered by the savage fruit, tannin and acidity of the Syrah - it's an unusual combination, but one that just works effortlessly. For a wine so young, it is already delicious to drink, but it certainly has the stuffing to evolve and improve for a good few years to come. A worthy addition to the Ravanès range, and an absolutely delicious wine. |
